Charge and Go: New State of Charge-Based Idle Fees by Electric Avenue Keep Chargers Flowing

As the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) continues to rise, so does the demand for efficient and accessible charging infrastructure. To meet this need, Electric Avenue is proud to introduce a new feature in our charge management software that allows charge point operators (CPOs) to set idle fees based on the State of Charge (SoC) of the vehicle. This feature encourages drivers to free up charging spots once their EV reaches a certain State of Charge, ensuring fair and efficient use of the charging network.

With this addition, Electric Avenue aligns with industry leaders, such as Tesla, who have long recognized the value of idle fees in promoting charging station availability. Yet, Electric Avenue takes this concept further, offering CPOs the flexibility to customize idle thresholds, making our software a competitive, adaptable solution across all EV makes and models.

How Does It Work?

With the new Idle Period Detection (Parking) setting in our Software, operators can configure idle fees under a tariff based on the State of Charge of an EV. This feature includes a dropdown option, allowing operators to set idle fees at various SoC thresholds, available in 5% increments from 75% to 100%. Keep in mind, it's recommended charge between 20% and 80% for optimal performance and longevity of the battery, so we do recommend capping this at 80%. Once the vehicle reaches the selected State of Charge, the session transitions to idle, encouraging the driver to move their vehicle and free up the charger for the next user.

Benefits for Charge Point Operators

1. Increased Charger Availability

Idle fees based on State of Charge help ensure that charging stations are occupied only as long as necessary. By discouraging prolonged parking at fully or near-fully charged levels, CPOs can increase turnover and maximize the usage of each station, ultimately improving the return on their infrastructure investment.

2. Improved Charging Network Efficiency

Idle periods can create bottlenecks, especially in high-demand areas. By prompting EV drivers to vacate the charger, operators can maintain smoother station operation, leading to a more efficient network and happier users.

3. Enhanced Revenue Potential

Idle fees provide an additional revenue stream for operators, helping offset maintenance costs and invest in further upgrades. At the same time, these fees encourage users to vacate chargers, which can be a win-win financially and operationally.

Benefits for EV Drivers

1. Reduced Wait Times

Idle fees help keep chargers available, reducing wait times for drivers in need of charging. This change fosters a more efficient charging ecosystem where drivers can count on available spots when they need them.

2. Transparent Charging Policies

Setting clear idle fee policies based on State of Charge provides transparency for drivers, helping them manage charging costs while supporting fair usage. Drivers know the exact point at which idle fees apply, enabling them to make informed decisions about when to move their vehicle. Our app will alert the driver that their session has ended, providing them with a 15 minute grace period to get to their vehicle and move it prior to incurring any Idle Fees.

3. Alleviating “Charger Anxiety”

As more drivers enter the EV space, access to chargers becomes crucial. By introducing these State of Charge-based idle fees, Electric Avenue helps create a culture of shared resources, making EV charging smoother and more accessible to everyone.

Final Thoughts

With our new State of Charge-based idle fee feature, Electric Avenue is addressing a common pain point for both CPOs and drivers. This flexible feature not only positions us competitively in the industry but also provides an inclusive solution for all EV drivers. Ultimately, it’s a forward-thinking feature that supports the evolution of a fair, efficient, and driver-friendly EV charging landscape.
